Julia Box (Acting Chair)

Brighton Youth Theatre

 

In 1987, while working as a theatre and

stagecraft instructor on a youth training scheme, Julia set up Brighton Youth Theatre as a voluntary youth organisation and it has just celebrated it’s 21st anniversary. She has worked for Brighton & Hove City Council as the Youth Arts Development Worker (4 days a week) for over 10 years, delivering and managing a variety of projects across Brighton and Hove, including Brighton Youth Theatre, which became part of the council Youth and Connexions Service in 2002. She also works freelance as a theatre workshop facilitator and trainer, specialising in the techniques of Augusto Boal.

Oldham Theatre Workshop 

 

For the last five years James has been full-time Artistic Director of Oldham Theatre Workshop. He has worked as a director, musical director and composer for theatre, opera and television. James has worked with the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Full House Theatre Company, Glyndbourne Opera House, Centred Theatre, Opera North, English Touring Opera, English Touring Theatre, the National Youth Music Theatre, M6 Theatre, Lion Television, Channel 4, ITV, and BBC Four. His most recent credits include a new musical "Eyam" recently filmed for a BBC One documentary and winner of a broadcasting award, the original score for the ITV series "Survivors" and Film 4's "All In The Game".

Sarah is Associate Director at Dundee Rep where she directs work for and with children & young people and also manages the Creative Learning Department. Prior to this Sarah worked at York Theatre Royal as the Education Associate & Youth Theatre Director for three years.  She has also been Associate Director at Red Ladder Theatre Company and Proper Job Theatre Projects directing professional work with and for Children and Young People and worked as an actor, director and facilitator for companies across the UK and Europe.

York Theatre Royal

 

A theatre director and workshop practitioner, Owen has specialised in creating exciting theatre with young people and is currently Youth Theatre Director at York Theatre Royal. His directorial credits include "The Children" and "The UN Inspector" (York Theatre Royal), "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" (The Courtyard Theatre) and "Singing the O’Reilly Song" (Barbican, Plymouth).  Owen has delivered theatre workshops in the UK and internationally for groups of all ages.

Sherman Theatre

 

Since 2001 Phillip has been Director of Youth Theatre for the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff. He has created a series of large and middle scale theatre performances – Lord of the Flies (Revisited), Dressing Up, Alice (through the looking glass), Dam Dogs (all female take on Reservoir Dogs), Frankenstein’s, Bob/s Dance Hall, Macbeth in 6 tons of sand, Savage Love, Gospel and 18/6. He has initiated international co productions between the Sherman Youth Theatre and the Czech Republic. ‘Gospel’ was restaged with senior members of the youth theatre and Albanian/Serbian performers at the invitation of the Skenaup International Theatre and Film festival at the National Theatre of Kosovo in November 2006. In July 2007 ‘Gospel’ was recreated as a site specific performance for a medieval castle in Italy. He was recently awarded a Creative Wales Award to continue his research into contemporary European Theatre practice and its application to his ongoing theatre work with young people..

Roger Hill

 

Roger was was founding chairman of NAYT when it started in 1982. He lectured for seven years at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts as part of the Community Arts Department. As an arts consultant he has worked for Arts Council England, the Council of Europe and many overseas bodies, producing several influential reports on arts development and young people. Roger currently works as a live artist with residencies at the Liverpool Bluecoat Arts Centre and the Cable Factory in Helsinki in his portfolio, alongside his continuing theatre and consultancy work. He also presents the longest-running alternative music programme on UK local radio.
