Board Recruitment
NAYT is governed by a board of directors of the company, who also act as the trustees of the charity. The board has a policy for its renewal and welcomes expressions of interest to join the board and support NAYT’s work as the development agency for youth theatre and young people’s participatory theatre.
Who they are?
The current board can be seen here. The board typically comprises nine members who represent youth theatre practice in the nine regions of Arts Council England and there may also be youth theatre practitioners from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Other members of the board contribute their expertise – as well as their interest in youth theatre – in areas such as learning and development, marketing/PR, producing, finance, cultural diversity, disability and personnel.
Meetings
The board typically meets formally six times a year (usually in London) and with one or more ‘away days’ where strategic issues are developed. Members are expected to normally attend three or more meetings a year and the Articles and Memoranda allow for the board to replace a member who does not attend three meetings in a row. The dates for the 2008 full board meetings are:
2 June 2008 15 September 2008 17 November 2008 (includes AGM)
Organisation Away Days
These will take place 30 September-3 October 2008. There is also a finance sub-committee that meets four times a year (usually in Darlington).
Joining the board
The board invites new members and bases their decision on the availability of vacancies – both immediate and in the future – and a simple application process. You should identify whether you wish to apply as a youth theatre regional member, or as a specialist. To apply please send a statement of interest and CV marked for the attention of Judith Clapham, Business Manager/Company Secretary, NAYT, Darlington Arts Centre, Vane Terrace, Darlington, DL3 7AX or email naytjudith@btconnect.com. They can be sent at any time but will only be considered at the board meetings listed above. If you wish your application to be considered at the above board meetings you will need to send your application to the NAYT office by 4 September 2008 or 6 November 2008.
What you need to know about NAYT
In making your application you should be able to demonstrate some awareness of NAYT’s current and planned activities. In addition to the documents in the download section above you may also be interested in our newsletter Onstage. Frequently asked questions are answered below.
The legal requirements
If you have never been a company board member or a trustee of a charity the legal requirements can seem daunting, even onerous. If you are appointed to the board you will be given every support to understand those requirements to enable you to contribute effectively to the board’s work. You may find the following documents helpful in the meantime:
National Occupational Standards for trustees
Companies House Directors and Secretaries Guide
Charity Commission information on the responsibilities of Charity Trustees
Finally
This is an exciting time to contribute to NAYT’s work. There are considerable responsibilities in helping to shape the work of an important arts organisation – but there are also huge rewards for the people who do it. If you would like to talk to one of the board, just let us know.
