Summer Opportunities for Youth Theatres

Saturday 22 May 2021

Amidst the ongoing rhetoric of ‘catch-up’ and ‘recovery’, there are two programmes which have been launched by the Government that we wanted to make sure that Youth Theatres are alert to.

The first of these is the Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme. Administered by the local council across the country, this programme provides summer holiday provision for children and young people accompanied by food. Different councils are managing this in different ways so please get in contact with your local authority to find out how the programme funds are being distributed. In most cases, organisations do not have to offer a full programme to be involved in the programme and are encouraged to partner with other local groups and charities. This is a great way to help young people in your area get some quality cultural provision this summer.

The second opportunity is for Summer Schools. Funding is being made available to schools to offer summer programmes for their Year 7 students to support them with missed transition time during the pandemic. As this is a school programme, to get involved, Youth Theatres need to generate a good relationship with their local school. If you have this already, get in touch and ask them if they need your support. If you are struggling, get in touch with your local Bridge organisation. Many are already running programmes to support small arts providers to be ready to support schools.

Information on the programme as a whole can be found here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/summer-schools-programme.
