Job Summary

We are looking for an emerging theatre director to join the Engagement department as Young Company Trainee Director in a fixed term role. We welcome applicants from Bristol and the surrounding areas, and those from underrepresented backgrounds in the arts sector, especially from the global majority.

Job Description

A focus on creative delivery over the yearlong residency - The Trainee Director will deliver Bristol Old Vic Young Company classes and direct at least one Young Company production. The trainee director will ensure that there is a continued high artistic standard within the department.

Hours: 24.5 hours per week (Combination of daytime & evening work)

Contract: Fixed Term (January 2026 to January 2027)

Salary: £16,800 (£24,000 pro rata) per annum

Job Requirements

  • Passionate about making work with and for young people

  • Demonstrable experience in running theatre projects with young people

  • Experience of directing high quality productions with young performers

  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge of professional theatre

  • Demonstrable knowledge of contemporary theatre practice, training and devising

  • Engaging and inspirational delivery in workshops for a range of people

  • An understanding of youth arts, issues, challenges and opportunities

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

  • Creative, flexible, committed team player with excellent communication and advocacy skills

  • Welcoming and professional approach

  • Ability to work in pressured situations

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with the Literary and Directors' Associate to contribute to the creative planning and programming of Young Company workshops, projects and productions

  • Lead various Young Company sessions (one evening of classes in Spring and Autumn Term, two classes in Summer Term)

  • Direct at least one YC production and devise and dramaturge as appropriate

  • Shadow on BOV productions where appropriate

  • Liaise with the Literary and Directors' Associate and Engagement team, be actively involved in additional participatory projects for young people (and community groups where appropriate)

  • Attend Literary and Programming meetings, where possible.
