Solar Bear work with deaf and hearing actors, theatre makers, artists and young people. They reach out to those often excluded from the arts, and run a Youth Theatre for deaf young people in Glasgow. This workshop explores inclusion and access for young people, particularly those who are deaf and hard of hearing. It will cover the following topics which everyone should know before starting their workshops to make sure everyone is included:

  • Deaf Awareness
  • Develop an understanding what accessibility means for deaf/hard of hearing community
  • How to facilitate a workshop with participants who are deaf or hard of hearing with different access preferences
  • Preparing and adapting your workshop throughout the workshop to make sure inclusion and accessibility is there
  • How to source and book access requirements such as: a BSL Interpreter, a Palantypist.

Craig McCulloch is a Scottish freelance actor, independent theatre making artist, performer in British Sign Language and Spoken English, and a workshop facilitator. He graduated from Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the  groundbreaking course, BA Performance in BSL/English. Since he has graduated, he has worked in various roles; an Actor, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Translator, BSL consultant and a workshop leader. Many of his workshops where he has co-led or led by himself has included young people and he recognises the importance of access and inclusion. The workshop will include Q&A, and will be accompanied by a BSL interpreter.

Raising The Game is NAYT’s annual training event for Youth Theatre directions, practitioners and freelancers. This year’s workshops will be held over Zoom. The link to the workshop will be sent out prior to the day. Each workshop has a limited capacity, however if there is enough interest we will offer evening workshops. Each workshop will be recorded and held in the Member’s Area of the NAYT website until the end of August to allow attendees to write up notes.

It is our hope to make these events as accessible as possible, including a subsidised ticket price. If you have access requirements, such as live transcribing, please get in touch at [email protected].
