Voice Magazine Development Manager

This is a freelance role working 72 hours per month (c. 9 days) running July 2017 to March 2018 with a likely contract extension. You should be able to offer flexible working hours throughout the week and be able to attend occasional team meetings in London, Birmingham and/or Diss (Norfolk) as well as travel elsewhere in the UK.

Voice is an online magazine run by a young editorial team for young people interested in the arts, culture and politics. We recruit and train volunteer reporters to write for the magazine and the site encourages young people to post content and find their voice in the arts. Young people can sign up for a free account and add blogs, reviews and events, or simply browse the site to find out more about the arts.  Take a look at www.voicemag.uk

Voice also hosts an area of the site called ‘Arts Award on Voice’ which supports young people working through their Arts Award. Take a look at www.artsawardvoice.com

Voice was launched by a group of young people in 2012 and has evolved considerably over the past five years, reaching 140,000 readers by March 2017. In April we launched a new version of the magazine and we have ambitious plans to build its profile, content, readership and partners. We have an active fund-raising campaign and hope to be able to grow the team and the reach of the magazine in future. 

The Development Manager will join a lively and creative team who work hard but have a lot of fun!  There are also opportunities to work with bright young arts reporters across the UK and support Voice’s ‘young reviewer’ projects at Brighton Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe and other festivals.

Essential experience

  • Minimum two years’ experience in comms & marketing and/or project development
  • Experience in partnership development
  • Experience working on a magazine or digital platform

  • Working with young people
  • Working in the arts, media or journalism
  • Editorial, writing or media skills

  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Confident at building new relationships
  • Willing to lead workshops or training

Key tasks

Development

  • Oversee the development of Voice as a magazine, working closely with the Voice Content Editor
  • Oversee and manage current relationships with annual projects such as Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton Fringe, Bath Festivals and other key partners
  • Build new relationships with potential partners and platforms 
  • Recruit and oversee the Voice Reporters volunteer team and lead the development of the scheme
  • Develop and implement an advertising strategy for banner ads on the site
  • Manage the Voice project budget
  • Report to and liaise with Voice funders or sponsors, as appropriate

Marketing

  • Develop and implement the Voice marketing plan
  • Oversee social media and online advertising to maximize readership
  • Represent Voice and/or Upstart Projects at conferences and industry events, occasionally delivering workshops and talks to increase awareness of Voice as a platform
  • Create occasional Voicemail eshots to promote activities or build readers

Reporting

  • Report to Diana Walton, Director, Upstart Projects
  • Monitor and report quarterly to Upstart Projects trustees on Voice performance against KPIs and development opportunities

Team liaison

  • Liaise with the Voice editorial team (Content Editor, Media Editor and Administrator - all part-time) and the Upstart Projects team (Director, Business & Projects Manager)
  • Liaise with the network of volunteer Voice Reporters

Pay

  • £100-£120 pd depending on experience
  • avg. 2-2.5 days per week
