NYAT Youth Theatre Company to open in Ely, Cambridgeshire

“In the current climate, an increasing number of young people do not benefit from an education in the performing arts, nor from the opportunities for vocational training. The National Youth Arts Trust, of which I am proud to be a patron, has been established to play a part in addressing this issue head-on.” - Hugh Bonneville, Actor & NYAT Patron

The National Youth Arts Trust is excited to announce our first Youth Theatre Company will be forming in the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire in February 2015.

NYAT is inviting students from four of the main schools around Ely to audition for this unique and exciting opportunity to be part of its Youth Theatre Company.

Students between the ages of 13-19 and studying at either Ely College, Witchford Village College, King’s Ely or Soham Village College will be eligible to audition. Also eligible are students who previously studied at one of these schools and are in the age bracket.

The Youth Theatre Company will be run by experienced theatre practitioners and offers professional training in drama and acting techniques and mentoring from industry professionals!

Workshops will be split by age groups and held weekly on Saturday afternoons and will cover a range of skills in vocal work, script work, devising, confidence building, team-work and improvisation; helping the participants explore their creative potential in drama.

There will also be the opportunity to create small performances for the local community using the skills and training learnt during the workshops. Workshops will be heavily subsidised, so costs incurred to the workshop participants is kept as low as possible.

The National Youth Arts Trust is passionate about helping young theatre makers have access to quality training opportunities and providing a positive and creative activity for teenagers in the Ely area.

The 13-15s group auditions will be held at each respective school on January 28th 2015.

The 16-19s group auditions will be held 10.00am at Ely College’s Needham Hall on January 31st 2015 and re-call auditions will be held the same day at 12.00pm.

Notes to Editors:

1.       The National Youth Arts Trust was founded in 2013 by award-winning theatre director Fiona Laird, to address the current and on-going crisis in the funding of arts education. Fiona is originally from Ely and is thrilled to be establishing the Trust’s first youth theatre company in her home town.

2.       The Bishop of Ely is one of NYAT’s patrons, and is hosting a fundraiser later this year, in support of the new youth theatre company.

3.       The National Youth Arts Trust helps provide access to the performing arts, for young people from non-privileged backgrounds.

4.       Our core work includes providing bursaries for music lessons and dance classes for those who cannot afford to fund themselves, and we support youth theatre projects in areas where there is little or no such provision. For those looking to move into Higher Education we aim to increase access to the Conservatoires for young people from the regions by providing help with the cost of travel to auditions and interviews.
